Juan Giraldo: "The book brings together two of my photo projects - Blue & Blue and E. 17th St. At its core the book is about identity, dignity, and allegory. The work revolves around the lives of the employees of Great Lakes Reload (GLR) located in Chicago (Blue & Blue) & the other work revolves around my family and their home life back in Paterson, NJ. I've always been interested in working class communities and how that interest manifests itself in my personal history. I was raised in the Riverside section of Paterson, NJ, as a first generation immigrant and laborer; after moving there from my native Colombia in the summer of 1981. Growing up there has had a profound impact on my personal and political views as an artist. In both instances the work is for the most part about that way of life (to be clear Latino/People of color that are blue collar manual laborers). This way of life is a little rough around the edges with glimmers of beauty & hope; I feel that the work and book object brings these things together."
