Relay Replay Press ~ Oregon
(Shu-Ju-Wang)

Shu-Ju-Wang: "Relay Replay Press is dedicated to working with seniors with dementia to create artist's books that illuminate the creative lives of the elderly.

"I received a 2008 Regional Arts & Culture Council grant to work with four seniors at various stages of memory loss. Through conversation, painting, printmaking, and collage, I engaged these delightful individuals; together we created artwork that became the foundation to the first four books of the Relay Replay Press.

"I became interested in working with the elderly with dementia when my American mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I thought making art and artist's books would be a great project for us to do together, then it occurred to me that it would be a great project to do with the elderly in general. And the rest, as they say, is (recent) history."

Marion: Family Picnic
By Shu-Ju Wang
Portland, Oregon: Relay Replay Press, 2008. Edition of 20.

Shu-Ju Wang: "It took me a long time to figure out that Marion wanted to paint watercolors. Once I figured that out, she and I spent many wonderful afternoons chatting and painting. She returned again and again to the image of the meadow with trees, hills, and sunset sky. I chose two to include in her book. As we painted, she would quite often talk about the family picnics that they had, with all the brothers and sisters there. I wondered if the images were about the family picnics? Thus the title."

Shu-Ju Wang: "Martha designed and Gocco printed the individual prints; I designed and Gocco printed the envelopes and the cover. The cover was also dyed with a very diluted acrylic paint; on Rives Lightweight, Nepal Light, and Nepal Heavyweight. Martha took to the Print Gocco like fish to water. She created 18 prints, each full of wonderful little observations about her daily life and sage advice. I thought her prints were like letters to her friends and family, and therefore chose a page format that referenced an envelope form. The book has extra pockets for her to add photographs or keepsakes, and the wrap around cover keeps everything together."

Shelia
A Passionate Printmaker

By Shu-Ju Wang & Sheila Springer
Portland, Oregon: Relay Replay Press, 2008. Edition of 20.

5.75 x 9"; 30 pages. Gocco printed on Rives Lightweight, Nepal Light, and Nepal Heavyweight. Original alphabet and book design by Shu-Ju Wang. Individual prints by Sheila Springer. Stab binding.

Shu-Ju Wang: "In her professional life, Sheila was a printmaker. She owned and worked in her Imprimery Graphics Studio making intaglios and collographs. She continues to make her art, creating collages, and sculptures out of readily available materials. In many ways, Sheila was very far down the road of memory loss. Often, I could not understand what she was trying to tell me. However, when she can focus on color, composition, and value, she is still the consummate artist."

Relay Replay Press Out of Print Title:

Esther
By Shu-Ju Wang and Esther Cohen
Portland, Oregon: Relay Replay Press, 2008. Edition of 20.

6 x 4"; 32 pages. Gocco printed on Rives lightweight, Rives BFK and Nepal Heavyweight. Original graphics and book design by Shu-Ju Wang. Photographs an documents by Esther Cohen. Palm leaf binding with ribbon. Laid in paper wrap with velcro closure. Printed title on front.

Shu-Ju Wang: "Esther's daughter dug up a treasure trove of family documents and photographs, and this was a walk down memory lane for mother and daughter, with me enjoying the stories. Esther is a lifelong dedicated mah jong player; come snow or blizzard, she met with her friends for a weekly game or two. The game was a constant through the many changes of her life, the kids, and grandkids. She continues to play.

"I chose a palm leaf binding because I wanted her book to resemble a pile of mah jongg tiles on the back, but still have the pages held together. Her prints and my prints are laminated together with Gudy O adhesive from Talas. I suppose they more resemble playing cards than mah jong tiles, but a similar idea anyhow. The pages are held together with two bone mah jong tile beads at the ends. And this is a 2008 winning hand in American mah jongg."
