Andrea Peterson: "I find the artist book in particular well suited for exploring my topics and an excellent way to communicate with an audience. ... I have an incredible attraction for the natural environment: ecosystems, domestic and wild, varying life cycles of plants, animals and humans, and interactions of all the above."

organized chance
By Andrea Peterson
La Porte, Indiana: Andrea Peterson, 2012. Edition of 6.

7 x 16"; 16 pages. Hand made papers. Letterpress text with transparent black and silver ink. Sewn binding. Laid in paper portfolio with black stretch-band closure. Colophon inkjet printed and tipped in portfolio case. Signed and numbered by the artist.

Colophon: "organized chance occurs as a whole consisting of independent elements where there are unlimited possibilities. Studying the Universe and its elements is a profound wonderment. Something has happened and will continue to happen. The four elements we rely on have taken millions of years to form by chance. We are at their grace. Will we squander our good fortune?"

Earth, fire, air, water, and cosmos are represented by pages of handmade paper.

Andrea Peterson: "This book was entirely inspired by the Fire page. I had a little leftover fiber from a visiting artist and I make large sheets from the leftovers. At the same time my mom sent me dried flowers. My mom works at a church and after all the funerals collects the flowers dries them and sends them to me. I personally detest flowers in my paper, which is why my container to store them in was stuffed and could fit no more. She is my mom I feel obligated to keep them. So I dumped them in this light red paper. When I pulled it out of the drier all I could see was fire, vision and passion.

"The Water page is a cotton rag paper marbled. The Air page is abaca, which is strong and translucent. The Earth page is corn, wheat straw, and goldenrod. The Fire page is finely beaten pigmented abaca with rose petals. The cosmos page is black cotton rag with white cotton rag.

"The envelope case has a brown cotton rag interior and a fainter cosmos patterning as an exterior."
