Midnight Paper Sales: "On the morning of September 11, 2001, Richard Goodman, like many New Yorkers, was on his way to work. As he crossed Madison Avenue, he looked south to see one of the World Trade Center Towers bellowing smoke.

"He wrote, 'I could set my position in time by that moment, like the frozen clock at Hiroshima.' For the next three months, Richard rode his bike almost every day from the Upper West Side to the World Trade Center disaster site, or as near as he could get to it. When he returned home, he wrote about what he had seen.

"From his bicycle, Richard could 'feel' the smell of water as he pedaled along the Hudson. He navigated through the chaos and uncertainty in the city, and observed the massive mobilization of the rescue effort. The Bicycle Diaries is a very personal account that documents the process of one New Yorker, among 19 million, dealing with the World Trade Center tragedy: from the initial shock through the process of returning to some sense of normalcy.

"On the morning of September 11, Gaylord Schanilec sat at his engraving table in Wisconsin working on New York Revisited, a book celebrating the city at the turn of the 21st century. His reaction, like that of most Americans west of the Hudson, was to ask himself, “What can I do?” A week would pass before he was able to contact Kenneth Auchincloss, the author and driving force behind New York Revisited, a book that Gaylord had been commissioned to produce by the Grolier Club of New York. Ken agreed that the tragedy should be acknowledged, but quietly. He felt that to let the tragedy overshadow the original purpose of the book – to celebrate the city, his 'home town' – would be unfortunate.

"The Bicycle Diaries is, ultimately, the answer to Gaylord’s question, 'What can I do?' Each letter, every word, of Richard’s diary has been cast in metal and carefully printed onto the pages of the book.

"In the autumn of 2010, Gaylord took a bike ride with Richard along the same streets that Richard had ridden in the autumn of 2001. He too could 'feel' the smell of the water along the Hudson as they biked toward the massive construction site where a new One World Trade Center was rising steadily into the afternoon sky. Ernest Morgan: Printer of Principle

The book was printed on Mohawk Superfine paper. The 26 special copies include an extra copy of a portrait of Ernest Morgan and archival ink-jet reproductions of the working materials involved in the portrait’s development. The special copies also contain four bookplates produced by Ernest Morgan. The text was hand set in Poliphilus with Blado italic, and the book was hand bound at Midnight Paper Sales. The introduction and afterword were cast in Monotype by Michael and Winifred Bixler.

The text is of stories shared by Morgan with Schanilec over a series of visits. Interspersed with the text are archival ink-jet reproductions of artifacts from Morgan’s career, along with two pieces of printing produced by Ernest himself. Schanilec added four impressions of his visit with Morgan in the form of color wood engravings.

It is possible for the rumination of a mid-life poet/printer to continue through the printing process, as evidenced by the inclusion of a second printing of one of the poems, with the title ERRATUM printed in blue on the second, slightly revised version of the poem. The color brown, printed next to the deep, walnut red paper of the Cave women, enables the engraving of a gizzard shad to truly leap from the blue sea across the opening spread of the book. This amazing feat was made possible with the color advice of a man’s daughter."

This is book 9 in the Midnight Paper Sales Little Book Series. Includes a tipped in spine label that reads "Gaylor Shamway," after a resident in Schanilec's hometown who sometimes receives his mail.

Bad Beat takes place at Zink's Club 34, a familiar bar with a card game going on upstairs. At the end of the story we are awakened to the meaning and implications of the term "bad beat," while "Joe Crow's Rules" are Hautman's observations about the game of Poker. Crow's opinions resonate far beyond the card table.

Buffaloed

An early work by Schanilec. The spare, hand-carved text tells a story of collective isolation, but the images, as if drawn from a Native American tale, point toward the mythic. Inherent in the title is the definition of the word as " being baffled or mystified." There is a sense of spiritual defeat in the text, yet the images offer the antidote. The lone figure of the buffalo-man—with the great beast's head resting atop a human body like an encompassing mask—suggests a potency of spirit in the face of despair. There is a stark undercurrent of anger in these pages, but the spareness of design refrains from overstatement and leaves room for individual interpretation and response.

The Corolis Effect

The 4th in the small book series by Midnight Paper Sales, this is Haitian-born Edwidge Danticat's amusing set of short prose pieces inspired by lessons in English as a Second Language. Twelve lesson days, two leaves per day. The recto of the first leaf has a decorative panel with the lesson number, the recto of the second leaf has the day's lesson.

Gaylord Schanilec: "In 1999 I had the pleasure of working with a poem by Edwidge Danticat for the Hungry Midnight Broadside Series. It was a poem about writing, beautifully crafted and colored, and it contained one word with an accented e. I set the poem in Bernhard Gothic, and not having an accented e available, I used an ordinary e. While signing the edition, Danticat, with a black pen, carefully added the accent to all 90 copies. Later, in immediate response to my inquiry, she sent a series of twelve short pieces of prose inspired by lessons in an English-as-a-second-language workbook. Once again I was delighted with her work … The text had been hand-set in Walbaum, and I’ve added twelve wooden numerals illuminated in color with engraved wood blocks. The book, signed by Danticat and myself, is bound in boards covered with paper marbled for the edition by Carol Scott.

"Edwidge Danticat is the author of three novels:
Breath, Eyes, Memory; The Farming of Bones; and Behind the Mountains, as well as a collection of short stories, Kirk? Emerson G. Wulling: Printer for Pleasure

,A printerly compilation of interviews and reproductions of ephemera from the Sumac Press. Edited, published, and additionally illustrated with wood engravings by Gaylord Schanilec.

"The work of Emerson Wulling, a printer for pleasure, serves as a reminder to those of us who are private press printers by profession," writes Schanilec. "Out of necessity our work is influenced by the marketplace and by the unavoidable posturing of the professional. He draws us back to that essential flame that brought us all to printing in the first place, a flame which inevitably flickers in a struggle to survive."

Schanilec visited Wulling at his shop, and later at an assisted living facility (the printer was then ninety-six years old), in 1996 and 1999. A professor by day, a printer by night, and always a of collector of books, Wulling had been printing books, broadsides, leaflets, chapbooks, pamphlets, and various untold pieces of job work for eighty-four years. His philosophy of printing, arrived at through practice, is expressed in a quote from his Press Preterite 1945: "After duty and necessity are satisfied, then pleasure may be served. It may be served admirably by a private press. Unambitious as the press may be, its operator has scope in his afterduty hours for mingling thought, whim, sentiment, art, and mechanics in the formation of a product that will remain to remind him of his pleasure, even if it plagues him with regret for inexpertness. . . . He can lay a dozen or a gross of items on the table and invite himself to remember what fun he had in making them. He can reflect on the friends he has found in distributing his product, and he can glow inwardly over the trove that has come to him in exchange."

Illustrative exempla of Wulling's work include: a recent letterpress prospectus and a lithographic reproduction (both tipped-in), reprints from original zinc line cuts; and archival ink-jet reproductions. Schanilec's masterful engravings depict presses, type case, galley bank, desk, and bookcase from Wulling's studio. Includes a checklist of Wulling's work from 1916–1998. Beautifully typeset and letterpress printed in Poliphilus and Bembo italic on Hahnemühle mouldmade paper. Casebound in cloth and paper over boards with matching slipcase and leather spine label. (9.5 x 14.5 inches; 76 pp.) Literate and complete. A handsome edition and exceptional printerly history.

Ink on the Elbow:
Conversations between David Esslemont and Gaylord Schanilec.

13.5 x 9”; 155 pages. 100 copies bound by Esslemont, 90 copies in full paste grained cloth with a cloth covered slipcase and 10 copies in a special full leather binding. 100 copies bound by Schanilec in half cloth with paste paper, with a cloth covered slipcase.

Both of these artists, Esslemont from Wales and Schanilec from Wisconsin, talk about making books and life in their respective areas. Selections from their emails and conversations reveal the anxiety and strife associated with their creative activity and display the extraordinary detail that book artists must consider. Interwoven are domestic life, scenes and the passing of seasons and world events.

Visits to the other's respective homes provide inspiration for art work. Outstanding is Schanilec's 33 inch panoramic color engraving of the Esslemont Homestead. There are also ten tipped in inkjet images and sample pages from their recent books.

The Intruder

5x7.5" with 32 pages. Printed on Zerkall mould-made paper. Bound in quarter blue Cialux cloth, with printed paper over boards and a paper title label printed with gold ink on black Arches cover. Enclosed in a slipcase. With a three-page, 5x13" panoramic engraving of Clayton Schanilec fishing his favorite pool. The panorama was printed in four colors on gray Hahnemuhle Ingres paper. A two-color cover engraving was printed with a split-fountain technique on black Hahnemuhle Ingres for the cover of the book. A small three color vignette of the Intruder's "plug" adorns the title page.

Gaylord Schanilec collaborates with his brother Clayton to produce this fifth title in the "Little Book" series from the press.

Gaylord Schanilec: "I went out with Clayton one morning before dawn leaving my fishing rod at home in favor of the digital camera. A fisherman is aware of the dawn, but his focus in on fishing, and the subtle drama of it eludes him. With my camera in hand I was able to study everything from the first faint lightening of the horizon to the initial stab of sunlight on the leaves of the distant trees."

Plus a foldout map of the lake, engraved by Mr. Schanilec, was printed on handmade kozo paper, and thirty 'text figures' of fish were printed from the original electrotypes used in the 1920 publication Fishes and Fish-Like Vertebrates of Minnesota, by Thaddeus Surber."

Michael Hoinski, "Grain by Wood Grain, a Movable Feast", The New York Times, Art & Design : "Lac Des Pleurs [is] Mr. Schanilec's ode to Lake Pepin, near his home in Stockholm, Wis., population 69 … The book took more than seven years to make.

"The project began when Mr. Schanilec, a self-taught wood engraver and fine printer who seamlessly uses traditional techniques to modern ends, acquired a Lund fishing boat and retrofitted it with a drawing table and library so that he could create while pondering the lake. 'I’m really into just going someplace I know nothing about, or into a subject I know nothing about, and just kind of letting it take me wherever,' Mr. Schanilec, 59, said.

"Lac Des Pleurs is a much-anticipated fine press book, an age-old genre enjoying a golden period. These small-batch, highly collectible works are typically made with movable type on a printing press with production methods dating back to Johannes Gutenberg, who invented letterpress printing in the 1440s. Mr. Schanilec, an obsessive naturalist who likes salty language, is a master of this domain.

"Mr. Schanilec' s latest, the 76-page Lac Des Pleurs, features his intricate and time-intensive engravings of the lake and its wildlife, accompanied by his original verse and the notes of European explorers of the area. Those start with Louis Hennepin, who christened it Lac des Pleurs, or Lake of Tears, because the Native Americans cried when their chief would not allow them to kill Hennepin and his colleagues. It also includes words by Mark Twain, who traveled there as a steamboat pilot in the 1850s, and Henry David Thoreau, who visited shortly before his death in 1862.

"Mr. Schanilec printed the book on antique English paper using his Vandercook letterpress, which he cranks with his arm and a rickety hip. … The book also opens with an exquisitely detailed, multicolored 2-by-3-foot map of Lake Pepin on handmade Moriki kozo paper that can be unfolded and laid flat. Based on a pocket-fishing map and United States Geological Survey materials, it took more than 500 hours just to carve into wood. Mr. Schanilec suggests that the map is the largest multiple-color wood engraving ever printed, and Mr. Dimunation of the Library of Congress said it was the largest one he could recall from recent years."

Gaylord Schanilec: "The River is a study of the 22-mile length of the upper Mississippi River known as Lake Pepin, or Pool Number 4 by the Army Corps of Engineers. This widest naturally occurring part of the river was dubbed the 'Lake of Tears' by Louis Hennepin in 1680, inspired by the tears of Indian men whose desire to kill the Frenchman was frustrated by their chief. The lake is home to a broad diversity of life, including, I have read, nearly 80 species of catchable fish. … This river, it seems to me, is the ultimate territory. I view myself as something of a modern day natural philosopher swimming in the wake of Darwin, or Thoreau. Of course there are no new species to be discovered, and I am no Henry David Thoreau, but for me this place, at this time, is as interesting as can be."

Mayflies of the Driftless Region

7.5 x 10.5"; 88 pages. Text hand-set in Bembo Monotype and printed on Zerkall mould-made paper imported from Germany. Of the edition of 400, standard copies of 300 bound in quarter leather by Gregor Campbell with paper made by hand for the edition by Mary Hark. The standard edition is issued in a slipcase. A special edition of 50 copies was bound in full calf skin by Jill Jevne, and contained in a custom enclosure, designed by her, and incorporating a selection of flies hand-tied for the edition by David Lucca. The images in this edition were printed on Gampi Torinoko, a delicate hand-made paper produced in Japan. The special edition also includes a separate leather-hinged portfolio containing an extra set of prints and progressive proofs of one image. 50 copies of the book remain in sheets for custom binding.

Gaylord Schanilec: "Dry Fly Entomology by Frederic M. Halford, published in London in 1897, was the inspiration for Mayflies of the Driftless Region. Halford, the Victorian innovator and popularizer of modern fly-fishing, scientifically described and surveyed the principal British mayflies of his time, but he did not claim his work as a comprehensive entomological treatise. Instead, Dry Fly Entomology was aimed at providing anglers with a basic, working understanding of the nature of aquatic insects. Mayflies of the Driftless Region can make no such claim; it is not a field guide. Instead, it is a study of mayflies by an artist.

I began this project with little practical knowledge of mayfly entomology. It was not the information in Halford’s Dry Fly Entomology that caught my attention, but rather the detailed wood engravings that illustrated it. While Mayflies of the Driftless Region may provide useful information for fishermen and women of similar naïveté, the essence of the book is art. I have created 13 depictions of mayflies, color wood engravings with each hue printed from a separate block of end-grain maple. These images are the result of careful microscopic study of specimens collected from streams near my home in rural Wisconsin.

Entomologist Clarke Garry, professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, has written text to accompany each of the images. Professor Garry documents the series of taxonomic steps involved in the formal scientific identification of each of the specimens. Also included are some of his notes that help to demonstrate his working method. In the context of a scientific journal, these identifications would likely be dry and difficult reading for most of us. However, in the pages of a finely printed book, the poetic nature of the language can be appreciated."

This is the seventh in the Little Book Series by Gaylord Schanilec’s Midnight Paper Sales press. The book’s structure is as simple and solid as the prose. In this short story, scholar-poet-writer Jim Heynen writes of preservation and of slower more mysteriously enchanting times. An old mare, an older barn; a dead mare, a barn ready for the bulldozer? Two boys hope not: Barn years aren’t horse years.

A poem by Edwidge Danticat about the accidental death of an immigrant construction worker in Florida. He slipped and fell face down into concrete he had just laid. Two policemen notified his daughter and turned over his possessions. His wallet contained photos of his daughter and two one dollar bills.

Danticat, born in Haiti, moved to New York at age 12. She earned an MFA in Creative Writing at Brown University. She has taught writing at New York University and the University of Miami.

Woodwork by Dick Sorenson. The wood used in printing and binding came from Farm 590. Fifty specimens printed directly from the wood with historical anecdotes and observations. Winner of the Gregynog Prize at the 2007 Oxford Book Fair.

Gaylord Schanilec: "Twenty wooded acres surround Midnight Paper Sales in western Wisconsin. This book documents the journey of Ben Verhoeven and Gaylord Schanilec into the woods to create a work not only about these trees, but of these trees.

"In all 24 species have been catalogued through image, historical anecdotes, and notes taken during the cutting, milling, engraving, and printing. The 53 images consist primarily of long grain and end grain specimens which have been taken from this property. In each case the image is manipulated through either color, impression, engraving, or some combination of the above to emphasize a certain characteristic of a species. The text varies as well from tree to tree, focusing on what role each played in the local history and in this project."

Excerpt from text: "We wondered if we could find a piece thick enough to slice for a tangential specimen. The butt section of the nannyberry 'log' was just wide enough to slice and make a type-high specimen. Due to its slender nature, the darker-colored pith of the trunk moves in and out of the surface plane of the slice in a pleasing way."
