Loraine Klinger: "Books are personal and intimate. Books can be pictures, writing, textures, three dimensional qualities and various combinations of the fore mentioned. I enjoy the textures and colors of various papers and the freedom of mixed media. Also books afford the viewer a more personal relationship because he/she holds it and views it at his/her own pace."

Play
By Loraine Klinger
Sante Fe, New Mexico: Loraine Klinger, 2004. Series Variant.

3.75 x 3.5 x 2.75" closed, 8.5" diameter opened; 266 leaves. Line drawings. Ink and watercolor. Exposed stitched binding. Lightweight illustrated paper boards.

Klinger prefers to waste nothing. This book is composed of different sized papers left over from other projects. She has added watercolor along the top edge and a line drawing to each page, and then trimmed, arranged, and sewn the pages together. The book is thick enough and sturdy enough that it can be fanned (and feels akin to a strange slinky) and calls to (some) mind(s) the sun drenched horizons of the New Mexico landscape.

Loraine Klinger: "This book style is slinky. I've done a number of different themes with this binding; tread mill, butterflies, fish, birds, etc. I like it because it makes a noise as you manipulate it as a slinky. The birds and butterflies are usually done on paste paper or marbled paper cut from a large sheet. The fish were drawn and then scanned into the computer and reversed so I would have one facing left and one facing right."
