In this series of editioned books Susan Happersett offers a commentary on women in contemporary society. Collaged images of traditional icons of female beauty and domesticity, most taken from vintage magazines, art books, and romance novels, are combined with collaged text. The result is a kind of poetry meant to stimulate response and dialog about sexual identity and women's roles.

The result is a kind of poetry meant to stimulate response and dialog about sexual identity and women's roles. Susan Happersett: "My fascination with mathematics and my love of visual arts has led me on a journey to build a link between mathematics and drawings. It has become my mission to express the intrinsic aesthetic value of Mathematics in a purely visual language. I use a number of graphing and geometric plotting techniques to examine the aesthetic characteristics of functions, sequences and series in a visual language. My drawings are an intense accumulation of lines and mark making resulting from my predisposition to counting. These drawings have an inherent repetitiveness similar to knitting, weaving, and lace making. Through the years my drawing has become a type of meditation."
   

Nature Fibonacci

This series of mathematical drawings is based on the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 ...), which brings joy to both sophisticated mathematicians and the untutored (because you don't need to be a genius to understand it) and to observers of nature, where the sequence is seen in growth and decay patterns.

Working from the front of the book, the first recto begins with a gird of marks made with 1 line, the second recto's grid has marks made with 2 lines, the third recto's with 3 lines, the fourth with 5 lines, the fifth with 8, etc. Working from the back, the process is mirrored on the verso. Hence, the left page of each spread works the Fibonacci sequence from the many to the one (as white marks on black paper), the right page from the one to the many (as black marks on light gray-green paper).

The result is much simpler, more satisfying, and ultimately alluring than the explanation.
