Green Cat Press ~ Utah
(Susan Makov)

Susan Makov: "The complexity of processes, whether photographic, digital, or printmaking, has been a welcome challenge over my career of 35+ years. As a printmaker who has adapted traditional print processes of letterpress, relief and screen-printing to contemporary technology, I have worked with authors to produce a collection of works incorporating text and image in the form of broadsides (printed on one side of paper) and handmade books.

"While the text is a key element of the design, the color and texture of the natural world are incorporated using landforms, scientific observations of sky or water, and many references to animal forms.

Susan Makov, introduction: "A visual look at the scientific designation of 'spheres' or layers of natural forms of life on earth. A juxtaposition of these terms from internet sources and His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet."

Colophon: "My response to the ongoing oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is dismay and hope. Amongst the layers of organic and inorganic materials I search for historic and scientific evidence that our world may continue to evolve in a positive direction. I have visualized the interaction of elements and various ecological systems through the creation of woodcuts and digital imagery. As an artist, it is the best way for me to respond to what feels like an impending crisis….

"I have turned to scientific terms to describe the layers of our world: burying the past, building on the past; upheavals in terms of physical collisions of plate tectonics and collisions of people with power against the powerless. I have turned to the Dalai Lama, who sees the world in broad terms and understands the importance of a moral attitude towards the environment as a realistic approach to human behavior."
